What a Turboprop Really Costs to Own and Fly

COST OF OWNERSHIP Turbine reliability changes what breaks. It does not change what accrues. The engine reserve line is where turboprop budgets are made or destroyed.

The step from pistons to a turboprop — a TBM, a PC-12, a Meridian, or a King Air — buys three things: turbine reliability, flight-level speed above most weather, and real useful load. What it does not buy is an escape from operating math. The numbers get bigger and they move to different lines. The owners who are happy at this level are the ones who budgeted the engine event from the first hour.

Fuel: Jet-A by the barrel

A single-engine turboprop burns 45–75 gallons of Jet-A per hour depending on type and altitude; a King Air burns 90–120 across two engines. At recent Jet-A prices in the $6–$7 range, fuel runs roughly $300–$800 per hour. Altitude discipline matters: the same airplane can burn 20 percent more down low, which is one reason honest trip math has to model the actual route, not a brochure cruise number.

The engine event is the budget

The PT6 family that powers most of this class carries TBOs of 3,500–3,600 hours with a hot-section inspection at the midpoint, and an overhaul bill that commonly lands between $400,000 and $600,000 per engine. Do the division and the honest accrual is $120–$180 per engine per hour — doubled on a King Air. This is why hourly engine programs exist at this level: they convert a six-figure event into a predictable per-hour cost, and they materially affect resale, because a buyer reads “on program” as “the reserve was actually funded.” Either way — program or self-funded reserve — the money is real and belongs in every hour you fly.

Maintenance, crew, and the fixed base

Scheduled inspections come in phases at this level, and a fair maintenance accrual beyond engines is $150–$300 per hour. Insurance for an owner-flown turbine single typically runs $20,000–$40,000 a year and is sharply sensitive to training currency; many owners fly with annual simulator recurrent as a policy condition. If the airplane flies with a professional pilot, budget $120,000–$200,000 with benefits, or day rates for contract crew. Hangar for these wingspans runs $1,000–$3,000 a month at most fields. The fixed base — before fuel — commonly totals $60,000–$150,000 a year owner-flown, and more than double that crewed.

The honest totals

All-in at typical utilization (200–300 hours a year), a single-engine turboprop generally runs $1,200–$1,900 per hour, and a King Air class twin $1,800–$2,800. Against charter rates and airline schedules across the missions this class actually flies — 300 to 900 nautical miles, into the thousands of airports the airlines never touch — the value case is often strong. But it should be calculated, not assumed.
