COST OF OWNERSHIP The purchase prices look like bargains. They are bargains for a reason: everything that costs money on a single, a twin has two of — and a few things singles do not have at all.
Piston twins are the classic value trap in aviation: a Baron, a 310, or a pressurized 340 can sell for less than a newer high-performance single, and the buyer concludes the twin is the better deal. The airplane may well be the right choice — real speed, real payload, real weather capability, a second engine over water and at night. But the operating math is a different sport, and it is worth doing honestly before the wire transfer, not after the first annual.
A twin in this class burns 22–32 gallons per hour in cruise. At mid-$6 avgas, fuel alone is $145–$210 an hour. That is the visible part of the second-engine tax. The invisible part is the reserves: two engines, each with an overhaul in the $45,000–$70,000 range against TBOs around 1,400–2,000 hours, means an honest engine reserve of $50–$90 per hour — plus two propellers accruing toward their own overhauls. On a pressurized, turbocharged twin like a 340, run those numbers at the high end.
Twins carry systems singles do not: a second full engine installation, crossfeed fuel plumbing, more complex landing gear, deice boots, and on the cabin-class airplanes, pressurization. A realistic maintenance accrual runs $100–$160 per hour, and annuals on a cabin-class twin routinely land in the $8,000–$20,000 range even without surprises. On airframes of this age the surprises are the point — which is why the records matter as much as the compressions. Start with the pre-buy fundamentals and a proper title search.
Twin insurance is priced on the pilot as much as the airplane. A current, instrument-rated pilot with meaningful multi time might see $6,000–$15,000 a year; a low-time multi pilot stepping up to a pressurized twin can see quotes well above that, or demands for extensive dual before solo coverage. Add hangar for a bigger airframe and the fixed base runs $15,000–$30,000 a year before flying.
All-in, a straightforward twin flown 100–150 hours a year typically costs $350–$550 per hour; a pressurized cabin-class twin runs $450–$700. Against that, the twin delivers 180–220 knots, six seats, and dispatch capability a single cannot match. Whether that trade is worth it depends entirely on your missions — which is a question you can now answer with data instead of hangar talk.
