What a Piston Single Really Costs to Own and Fly

COST OF OWNERSHIP The purchase price is the entry fee. The real number is the hourly cost with every reserve counted — and the fixed costs you pay whether you fly or not.

Ask three owners what their piston single costs per hour and you will get three numbers that differ by a factor of two — usually because each one is counting different things. Fuel is easy to see. Engine reserves, maintenance that has not happened yet, and the hangar bill that arrives in a no-fly month are where the honest math lives. Direct operating cost: what each hour burns

Fuel dominates. A trainer-class single burns 8–10 gallons of 100LL per hour; a high-performance single burns 14–18. At recent avgas prices in the mid-$6 range, that is roughly $55–$115 per hour before anything else turns. Add oil, and a maintenance accrual for the inspections, squawks, tires, and brakes that hours generate — a fair planning figure is $30–$60 per hour for a simple airframe, more for retractable gear or a turbocharger.

The engine reserve is not optional

Every hour flown consumes a slice of the next overhaul. A typical Lycoming or Continental in this class carries a 2,000-hour TBO and an overhaul bill in the $30,000–$55,000 range, which works out to roughly $15–$28 per hour that should be set aside from day one. Skipping the reserve does not make the overhaul cheaper — it just makes it a crisis. A propeller reserve adds a few dollars an hour more. Fixed costs: the part that punishes low utilization

Hangar or tie-down ($150–$800 a month depending on your airport), insurance ($1,200–$3,500 a year for a typical pilot in this class, more for low time or high hull value), the annual inspection ($2,000–$4,000 in a clean year), database subscriptions, and registration. Call it $8,000–$18,000 a year before the first flight. This is why utilization is the single biggest lever on cost per hour: at 50 hours a year, fixed costs alone can add $200–$350 to every hour; at 150 hours, the same bills add $55–$120.

The honest totals

Put together, a simple four-seat single flown 100 hours a year typically lands between $150 and $250 per all-in hour; a high-performance single runs $250–$400. Those ranges are wide because airports, insurance profiles, and engine times vary — which is exactly why a generic number is not good enough when you are deciding between two specific aircraft, or between owning and renting.
